You Don’t Need a Rich Husband: Building Financial Freedom on Your Own Terms

Let’s talk about the financial plan that never was: marry rich, live happily ever after & never worry about pensions.

Spoiler alert — it’s 2025. Prince Charming’s salary isn’t your retirement plan - because in my case, he’s fallen off the face of the earth! And even if you do end up in a relationship, relying on someone else’s money for long-term security is about as stable as Wi-Fi on a plane.

This article isn’t anti-relationship. It’s just pro-you having your own money.

👏 The Myth of “He’ll Sort It”

You’d be amazed how many clever, capable, brilliant women are quietly running with the belief that one day, he’ll sort it.
He’ll have the pensions.
He’ll handle the investments.
He’ll deal with the house deposit.

He also might lose his job, forget to mention his £60k credit card balance, or just decide he’s “not really a financial planning kind of guy”.

Even if he’s amazing — why outsource your independence?

💪 Financial freedom isn’t a man — it’s a plan

Here’s what being financially secure on your own terms can look like:

  • You’ve got your own pension — even if it’s just a small start.

  • You invest — maybe in a stocks & shares ISA or multi-asset funds, not because you love investing per se, but because you get the power of compounding.

  • You know your monthly budget, even if it’s got the occasional bottomless brunch in it.

  • You don’t need someone else to bail you out, cover your lifestyle, or co-sign your mortgage.

If you choose to build wealth with someone — great. But that should be a choice, not a crutch.

💼 Your net worth > your relationship status

There’s something wildly underrated about being the one who can pay for the holiday, not just pack for it.

About having the confidence to walk into a financial adviser’s office — or open an investment account — without waiting for someone else to lead the way.

Whether you’re in a relationship or not, your finances should never be a “we’ll cross that bridge later” thing. Because bridges burn, and you deserve more than scorched earth and a cancelled credit card.

🔥 Real empowerment is owning your money

Not in a “boss babe” hashtag way — in a I-know-what’s-in-my-ISA-and-I-know-how-much-I-spend-on-Uber Eats kind of way.

It’s not glamorous. It’s not always fun. But it’s the kind of security that outlasts any man, job, or market wobble. And that’s the kind of rich that actually matters.
